Twin earthquakes strike off Surigao del Sur's Lingig town

MANILA, Philippines — Twin earthquakes were recorded off Surigao del Sur’s Lingig town early Tuesday morning, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

According to the state seismologist, tectonic quakes of 4.9 magnitude and 4.2 magnitude occurred at 3:42 a.m. and 5:59 a.m., respectively, near Lingig on August 20.

Phivolcs said the two temors were aftershocks of the magnitude 6.8 earthquake that hit the waters of Surigao del Sur last August 3.

Phivolcs said the magnitude 4.9 tremor had a shallow depth of one kilometer, while the magnitude 4.2 quake had a depth of 19 kilometers.

The twin earthquakes were felt in Bislig town, but Phivolcs has yet to disclose recorded instrumental intensities of the tremors as of this writing.

Phivolcs said no aftershocks and damage to property may be expected from the twin earthquakes.
