Magnitude 4.2 earthquake jolts Surigao del Sur town

MANILA, Philippines — A magnitude 4.2 earthquake struck a town in Surigao del Sur on Tuesday afternoon, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported.

According to Phivolcs, the quake was located east of Marihatag and struck at 5:50 p.m. It was tectonic in origin and had a depth of 24 kilometers.

Intensity I and Instrumental Intensity II were felt in Tandag City, Surigao del Sur. No aftershocks and damages are expected, Phivolcs added.

However, Phivolcs recorded earthquakes of 4.9 magnitude and 4.2 magnitude that occurred at 3:42 a.m. and 5:59 a.m., respectively, near Lingig town in Surigao del Sur on Tuesday.

The twin temors were aftershocks of the magnitude 6.8 earthquake that struck Surigao del Sur on Aug. 3.
