LTO to probe the purchase of 756 units of breath analyzers in 2015 and 2017 that were now found to be unusable.

MANILA, Philippines — Land Transportation Office (LTO) chief Vigor Mendoza II has ordered a “thorough investigation” of the purchase of 756 units of breath analyzers in 2015 and 2017 that were found to be unusable.

Only 288 of the 756 units could be fixed and recalibrated, Mendoza said, adding that 150 units were bought at P68,000 per piece in 2015 while the second batch of more than 600 units were bought at P38,000 each.

Mendoza said the LTO is conducting an assessment whether it would be better to buy new breath analyzers than have them fixed.

The assistant secretary assured that should the LTO purchase new breath analyzers, the procurement process would be transparent. —Jerome Aning
