MANILA, Philippines 鈥� Whirlwind Corporation stakeholder Cassandra Ong has maintained that she did not graduate even in elementary school, despite being shown by lawmakers photos of her wearing graduation attire and her being in a graduation party.
At the sixth hearing of the House of Representatives鈥� quad-committee hearing held on Thursday, lead presiding officer and Surigao del Norte 2nd District Rep. Robert Ace Barbers asked Ong again about her educational background.
In response, Ong said she studied with a Manila Patriotic School in Binondo, but she failed to finish her elementary education.听 Barbers then asked if Ong studied in China or any other high school, which the latter denied.
However, Barbers then showed Ong a photo of her wearing a blue toga and a blue graduation head cap 鈥� which Ong said was her merely wearing a toga of the Department of Education鈥檚 Alternative Learning System (ALS).
鈥淎h you didn鈥檛 study in China?听 So you were only here in the Philippines, only elementary.听 Up to Grade 6?鈥� Barbers asked.
鈥淚 think I wasn鈥檛 able to finish it,鈥� Ong replied.
鈥淎h, is it Grade 5?听 But I have here a photo of you wearing a toga for graduation.听 Ah, this one.听 It seems to be for high school听graduation or college eh.听 What is this school?鈥� Barbers fired back.
鈥淭hat鈥檚 a public school, ALS.听 But I wasn鈥檛 able to finish that, I only went there several times,鈥� Ong added.
But Barbers noted that ALS is a part of the high school education system of the country.
鈥淏ut this ALS,听that is a听high school system right?听 Isn鈥檛 ALS for high school students?听 Alternative Learning听System, right?听 So, you have, you were registered with DepEd,听you availed the ALS,鈥� he said.
鈥淚鈥檓 not sure, Mr. Chair,鈥� Ong replied.
鈥淗ow were you able to enroll with the ALS if not, because if you enroll, of course, you would register your name there right?鈥� Barbers asked.
Ong maintained that she only had her photo taken 鈥� to which Barbers teased her if it was meant to be a profile picture for social media accounts.
But eventually, Bukidnon 2nd District Rep. Jonathan Keith Flores showed more photos of Ong 鈥� including one which showed her celebrating with other students wearing togas too.
鈥淎ctually, somebody also sent听me several photos, similar also, right?听 Was it a graduation or you just posted something to show that you graduated听too?听 You joined photos only?听 But it was a graduation party?鈥� Flores asked.
鈥淎gain po, Mr.听Chair, I only joined when they were taking photos.听 That is the graduation of ALS,鈥� Ong said.
Ong also said that she does not know many of the people in the photos, saying that she was not too close with them having attended two or three ALS sessions only.
However, Flores showed another photo where Ong and another girl seemed close.听 Ong said she may know the person only if the face of the other person was not covered.
鈥淥kay. How about another picture po?听That鈥檚 the two of you. There鈥檚 another picture there. It鈥檚 the same听occasion?鈥� Flores asked.
鈥淵es po, Mr. Chair,鈥� Ong said.
鈥淭he one you are with, did she also take a picture only with ALS graduates or something else?鈥� Flores asked again.
鈥淢aybe they are graduating,鈥� Ong replied.
Ong鈥檚 educational attainment has been a topic that she refused to discuss in the past hearings.听 During the quad-committee鈥檚 hearing last August 29, Ong was cited for contempt for not cooperating with lawmakers as she refused to answer questions directly.

The motion to cite Ong for contempt, however, was lifted before the hearing ended as she answered lawmakers鈥� questions.

But on Thursday, Ong was cited for contempt again, upon a motion from Abang Lingkod party-list Rep. Joseph Stephen Paduano.

Lawmakers from the quad-committee believe that Ong, who holds a 58 percent stake at听Whirlwind听Corporation听鈥� the听company听that leased land in Porac, Pampanga to Philippine offshore gaming operator (Pogo) hub Lucky South 99 鈥斕齣s crucial to their investigation.
During the September 4 hearing, Ong admitted that听Whirlwind鈥檚 top boss, a certain Duanren Wu who happens to be her godfather, is a former Chinese cop.
