Lane of Nueva Ecija highway closed to traffic after retaining wall collapsed

MABALACAT CITY, Pampanga — About 100-meter portion of a lane along Maharlika Highway in Piut village, Carranglan, Nueva Ecija has been closed to traffic after part of a retaining wall collapsed due to heavy rains on Saturday, September 21.

In an advisory, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Region 3 office in the City of San Fernando, Pampanga said warning signs had been installed along Kilometer 187+400 of the national road.

“Please be informed that the Maharlika Highway at K187+400, Barangay Piut, Carranglan, Nueva Ecija, is currently reduced to one lane due to a road slip and a collapsed retaining wall,” the regional agency said on Sunday, September 22.

“Motorists are advised to exercise caution, follow all posted signs, and plan their travel accordingly,” it added.

DPWH Region 3 said several meters of the retaining wall collapsed due to the heavy monsoon rains brought by Tropical Depression “Igme.”

It also noted that barriers have been strategically installed along the highway and that maintenance workers are on-site to ensure the safety of motorists and to monitor the situation.
