DOH reports 82% rise in dengue cases from January to October

MANILA, Philippines — There has been a significant increase in recorded dengue cases from January 1 to October 4 this year compared to the same period in 2023, the Department of Health (DOH) said.

In a statement on Friday, the DOH said 269,467 dengue cases were logged during the said dates this year — an 82 percent increase from the 147,678 cases in the same period last year.

The DOH noted that from these cases, 2,856 (1.06 percent) had severe dengue.

Meanwhile, 702 people died because of dengue, which posed a case fatality rate (CFR) of 0.26 percent — lower than the 0.37 percent CFR in the same period last year.

The DOH noted that these numbers may still change due to late reporting from some areas.

It then reiterated its reminder to the public to follow the “4S strategy” against dengue:

  • Search and destroy mosquito breeding grounds
  • Self-protection measures
  • Seek early consultation when experiencing symptoms
  • Support fogging or spraying in local hotspot areas

“The DOH urges the public to stay alert and continue efforts to protect themselves and communities. We encourage everyone to practice preventive measures and seek medical attention at the first sign of dengue symptoms,” said Health Secretary Teodoro Herbosa, as quoted in the statement.
