Magnitude 4.3 earthquake strikes off Surigao del Sur town

MANILA, Philippines — A magnitude 4.3 earthquake struck the waters off Hinatuan town in Surigao del Sur on Tuesday morning, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported.

The state seismologist said that the magnitude 4.3 tectonic tremor occurred at 7:42 a.m. on Tuesday, and its epicenter was 98 kilometers east of Hinatuan town. It had a shallow depth of seven kilometers.

Phivolcs initially reported that the earthquake had a magnitude of 4.5 with a depth of 13 kilometers.

This was an aftershock of the magnitude 7.4 earthquake that hit Surigao del Sur on December 2, 2023, Phivolcs said.

The institute also noted that there are no expected damages or aftershocks.
