BATANGAS CITY — The provincial government in this city distributed generator machines and survival kits to different local government units (LGUs) affected by Severe Tropical Storm Kristine, officially kicking off the province’s holiday celebration.
In his speech Saturday night at the annual “Paskuhan” with the theme “Liwanag ng Pagkakaisa” (Light of Unity) at the capitol compound, Gov. Hermilando Mandanas said they dedicate the celebration to all affected Batangueños who are still recovering from the calamity that struck late October.
“Tonight, we want to emphasize our unity and give hope. As we light up our [Christmas tree and the provincial capitol compound], we want to show that no one will be left behind.. remembering and supporting all typhoon victims in the province,” Mandanas said.
With the Taal Volcano remaining restive, Mandanas said the provincial government was also looking after those who would be affected by volcanic unrest.
Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office head Dr. Amor Calayan said the assistance aims to equip locals in calamity-prone areas with disaster preparedness response.
“The light of unity that we want to portray is extended to all affected towns. Together, we will recover,” she said.
The kit includes pick-up forceps and bandages to be used in first-aid assistance.
The LGUs that received the assistance are Talisay, Tanauan City, Lipa City, San Luis, Bauan, San Nicolas, Alitagtag, Cuenca, Agoncillo, Laurel, Balete, Lemery, Mabini, Bayan, Calaca City, Tuy, Nasugbu, and Calatagan.
In a report sent to the Philippine Agency, the provincial government offices recorded 45,577 damaged houses, 15,696 affected farmers, 929 livestock and poultry affected farmers, and 59 casualties.
Meanwhile, the Provincial Social Welfare Development Office P41,920,218.50 worth of humanitarian assistance was given to affected families. (PNA)
