LIMAY, BATAAN — The mayor of this town died of a heart attack on Thursday morning at the age of 76, a close ally and former municipal government employee said.

Mayor Nelson David had been suffering from diabetes prior to his death, his close political ally Joseph Pereyra told Inquirer in a text message.

Pereyra confirmed that David died while undergoing treatment in an undisclosed hospital.

With his passing, his son and Vice Mayor Richie Jayson David will assume his duties as mayor.

Last October, father and son filed their certificates for candidacy for their reelection bid as tandem in the 2025 midterm elections.

He was to run as Limay mayor for his last and third consecutive term.

The elder David was one of Bataan’s veteran politicians, having been elected mayor since 1988 when he had his first stint until 1992. He was also mayor from 1992 to 1994, then from 1994 to 1998. He ran for governor in 1998 but lost.

In 2019, he made a comeback and won his reelection bid in 2022 as mayor of the 12-barangay town, the lone first-class municipality in Bataan, which hosts, among others the Petron refinery plant.
