MANILA β Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) chief Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr. said Monday that upholding human dignity is central to its mission of protecting the country and its people.
βThe protection of human dignity is not separate from our mission βit is at the center of it. The AFP has come a very, very long way in integrating human rights principles into our operations and institutional culture,β he said during the flag-raising rites in Camp Aguinaldo, Quezon City, as the military observes National Human Rights Consciousness Week.
Brawner also underscored the AFPβs steadfast commitment to promoting and protecting human rights as a cornerstone of its mandate.
He also reminded AFP personnel of their role as guardians of the Constitution and defenders of the Filipino peopleβs fundamental rights.
Republic Act 9201 mandates the commemoration of National Human Rights Consciousness Week from Dec. 4 to 10 of every year.
This is pursuant to the observance of Dec. 10 as International Human Rights Day.Μύ
