MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) will be on heightened alert from Dec. 13 to Jan. 6 in anticipation of the influx of travelers during the holiday season.
PCG commandant Adm. Ronnie Gil Gavan ordered on Monday all coast guard districts, stations and sub-stations to beef up security and safety measures in all ports and ferry terminals nationwide to ensure orderly sea travel operations as well as the security of tourists at beaches and private resorts across the country.

“Our kababayan have long been waiting for this season to spend quality time with their families and loved ones, either at their home provinces or in various vacation spots.
Thus, we are anticipating and preparing for the high volume of maritime traffic,” Gavan said in a statement. The PCG ‘s K-9 units and security teams will also carry out inspections in passenger terminals and ships to ensure the safety of port operations. —Frances Mangosing
