MANILA, Philippines — Rain is expected to occur  Friday, Dec. 13, in portions of Luzon and Mindanao due to three weather systems: the northeast monsoon, shear line, and intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ).

In the 4 a.m. weathercast, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said it will continue to affect parts of Northern Luzon and the eastern section of Southern Luzon, respectively, and the ITCZ will prevail in the southern portion of Mindanao.

Pagasa weather specialist Rhea Torres said the northeast monsoon will cause overcast skies on Friday in Cagayan Valley and certain areas of the Cordillera Administrative Region, Apayao, Ifugao, Mountain Province, and Kalinga.

She also said that parts of Quezon and the Bicol Region will see scattered rain showers, thunder, and lightning due to the easterlies.

“But we don’t expect it to be as strong as the day before,” Torres noted in Filipino.

Generally fair weather will prevail in Abra, Benguet, and a huge portion of Central Luzon despite chances of light rains, she added.

Torres likewise said that due to localized thunderstorms, Metro Manila and the rest of Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal and Quezon), and portions of Mimaropa (Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, and Palawan) will experience rain on Friday.

In Mindanao, the Pagasa weather expert said the axis of the ITCZ will make possible the occurrence of scattered rain showers, lighting, and thunder in Basilan, Sulu, and Tawi-Tawi, as well as isolated and sudden rainfall in other parts of the region’s southern section.

“For the rest of Palawan, Visayas, pati na rin sa Mindanao area, [the] weather will be good. So it would be warm, especially around noon, and there’s a possibility of isolated thunderstorms by afternoon and evening,” Torres further said in Filipino.

On Saturday, Torres said that a big portion of the country will have generally fair weather, although the effect of the shear line, or the convergence of northeast monsoon and the easterlies, will intensify this weekend.

No gale warning is raised over the seaboards of the country for Friday, Pagasa said.
