Sperm whale found dead off Bohol town
TAGBILARAN CITY — A sperm whale was found dead near Banacon Island in Getafe town, Bohol on Monday afternoon, Dec. 16, Mayor Casey Camacho said.
The whale was 30 meters long, roughly the size of a large school bus. It weighed as much as four tons.
Camacho said personnel of the Philippine Coast Guard and residents pulled the dead whale to the shore of the island as they were waiting for the low tide on Tuesday evening to bury the carcass as it was already decomposing.
An non-government organization (NGO) will conduct a necropsy to determine the cause of the whale’s death.
The sperm whale is listed as endangered under the Endangered Species Act and depleted under the Marine Mammal Protection Act.
