Heavy to intense downpours forecast in four areas this weekend

MANILA, Philippines — Heavy to intense rains are expected in four areas during the weekend due to the shear line and intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ), the state weather bureau said on Saturday.

In its weather advisory, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said that Cagayan, Apayao, and Palawan will experience heavy to intense rainfall (100 to 200 millimeters of rainfall) on Saturday (December 28).

Heavy to intense rainfall will continue to prevail in Cagayan and Isabela, on Sunday (December 29).

Pagasa warned that heavy to intense rainfall will likely bring numerous floodings, especially in urbanized, low-lying, and coastal areas, while landslides are possible in moderate to highly susceptible places.

Meanwhile, the following areas will experience moderate to heavy rainfall (50 to 100 millimeters of rainfall):

  • Dinagat Islands

  • Sulu
  • Tawi-Tawi

Moderate to heavy rainfall may bring localized flooding mainly in urbanized, low-lying, and coastal areas, while landslides are likely in highly susceptible areas.

Pagasa noted in its 4 a.m. weather forecast that the shear line, or the convergence of warm and cold winds, will bring rain to Eastern Luzon.

Meanwhile, the ITCZ, or the merging of winds from the northern and southern hemispheres, will bring rain to the southern parts of the country.
