MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine National Police-Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (PNP-CIDG) arrested 23 individuals allegedly involved in illegal mining activities in Agusan del Sur.

In a report Sunday, the PNP-CIDG said one of the 23 is a minor and that they were arrested at Purok 11, Sitio Away, Barangay San Andres, Bunawan, Agusan del Sur on December 27 during a joint operation of its regional force, local police, and representatives of the Mines and Geosciences Bureau.

Acting PNP-CIDG Director Gen. Nicolas Torre III said the 23 individuals were arrested after they received verified intelligence concerning ongoing illegal mining activities in the area.

During the operation, Torre said authorities seized 35 sacks of gold-bearing rock materials, a percussion hammer, an electric drill, a drilling rod, cellophane wrappers containing ammonium nitrate fuel oil (ANFO), improvised explosives with ANFO, improvised electric detonators, blasting caps, and a regular hammer.

The PNP said, “The suspects are now under the custody of the Bunawan MPS (Municipal Police Station), with charges for violations of Republic Act No. 7942 (Philippine Mining Act of 1995) being prepared.”

“The minor has been turned over to the Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office,” it added.

The PNP-CIDG said a deeper investigation is ongoing to identify and charge the financiers and operators behind the illegal mining activities.
