Classes still suspended in Bicol areas due to heavy rains

LEGAZPI CITY — Classes were still suspended in some provinces in the Bicol region on Thursday, Jan. 9, due to the threat of heavy rains brought by a shear line.

In Albay, classes at all levels in all public and private schools remained suspended in most areas except in Malilipot town, where classes were suspended only in the pre-school to senior high.

Meanwhile, local governments in the towns of Pio Duran and Jovellar lifted the class suspension.

Gov. Baby Glenda Bongao also ordered resumption of work in government offices in areas not affected by floods, landslides, and lahar flow.

Bongao said some employees may be allowed to avail work-from-home provision, especially those in flooded areas and cannot travel due to impassable roads.

In Camarines Sur, in-person classes were still suspended while schools were advised to implement modular distance learning due to expected heavy to intense rains from 100 to 200 millimeter until Saturday.

Gov. Vincenzo Renato Villafuerte advised the local officials to conduct pre-emptive evacuation in areas prone to floods and landslides and ensure that water channels are cleared with debris and wastes.

In Sorsogon province, Sorsogon City Mayor Ma. Ester Hamor encouraged the schools to shift to asynchronous classes after some villages were submerged by severe flooding.

Classes at all levels in Catanduanes were still suspended as Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) raised a red rainfall warning in the province on Wednesday.

Intense rains triggered landslides in Barangay Genitligan in Baras town on that day and rendered roads impassable.

In the 8 a.m. advisory on Thursday, Pagasa Southern Luzon said light to moderate rains were affecting Northern Samar and some parts of Sorsogon, Albay, Camarines Sur and Catanduanes.
