84% of Filipinos back gov’t move to assert rights in West PH Sea – Octa

84% of Filipinos back gov't move to assert rights in West PH Sea - Octa

MANILA, Philippines — Eighty four percent of Filipinos support the national government’s efforts to protect and assert the country’s maritime rights in the West Philippine Sea amid a, according to a non-commissioned Octa Research survey.In its Tugon ng Masa nationwide survey released Thursday, OCTA Research asked 1,200 male and female respondents aged 18 and above whether or not they would support the government’s endeavors to assert the country’s rights in its territorial waters. 

According to OCTA, 84 percent are rallying behind the national government, noting that the agreement is highest in Metro Manila, with 90 percent of adult Filipinos expressing support.

“Balance Luzon recorded the lowest agreement at 81 percent. Among socioeconomic classes, agreement ranges from 77 percent to 84 percent, with the highest level observed in Class D, followed closely by those in Class E,” said OCTA.

A quick look at the results shows that the agreement is nearly similar between males (84 percent) and females (83 percent). 

Meanwhile, the percentage of adult Filipinos who supported the national government’s efforts is higher among Filipinos in rural areas (86 percent) than those in urban areas (81 percent).

OCTA’s poll likewise showed that 91 percent of Filipinos are familiar with

“Awareness is highest in Visayas, where 96 percent of adult Filipinos are familiar with the issue, while Mindanao recorded the lowest awareness level at 87 percent,” said OCTA. 

“Across regions, Filipinos in the Cordillera Administrative Region, Mimaropa, and Western Visayas are familiar with the current issues regarding territorial disputes in the West Philippine Sea,” Octa Research pointed out

OCTA said the survey was conducted using face-to-face interviews from November 10 to 16, 2024.
