MANILA, Philippines — President Marcos said on Monday that he supported plans to extend the term of Philippine National Police chief Gen. Rommel Marbil, who was set to step down on Feb. 7 at the mandatory retirement age of 56.

In an interview, the President clarified that Malacañang was studying the proposal, citing the “very strong argument that it would not be good for stability, especially to change the chief PNP in the middle of a campaign period and then approaching an election period.”

“I think that is probably a very strong argument to keep [Marbil] on, at the very least, until after the elections,” Marcos said of Remulla’s statement. —Melvin Gascon
