MANILA, Philippines — Overcast skies and rains were forecast to occur in many areas of the country on Tuesday, January 21, as the northern monsoon, shear line, and easterlies prevail.

Chenel Dominguez of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said in a morning weathercast that the shear line will bring cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and isolated thunderstorms to Northern Samar and Eastern Samar.

The shear line is where cold winds brought by the northeast monsoon, locally called amihan, and warm winds from the Pacific Ocean from the easterlies mingle.

The Pagasa weather expert also said that the northeast monsoon will influence atmospheric conditions in Luzon on Tuesday.

“We can also see that the eastern section of our country, particularly Cagayan Valley, Aurora, and Quezon, will experience cloudy skies with light rains,” Dominguez said in mixed Filipino and English.

“For Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon, we can expect partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated light rains,” she added.

“For Palawan and the rest of Visayas and Mindanao, we are expecting generally fair weather, but there will still be chances of localized thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening,” she added.

Pagasa likewise said that based on currently available data, no cyclone or weather disturbance will form within or outside the Philippine area of responsibility as of its latest 24-hour forecast period.
