MANILA, Philippines — The Senate has approved on the third and final reading House Bill No. 10841, the Revised Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) Law, which, among others, seeks to strengthen the agency by introducing policy and organizational reforms, including setting a fixed term for its commandant.

Senate President Francis Escudero said that fixing the term of office of the PCG commandant to three years would provide stability to the service.

“Given the situation we are facing in the West Philippine Sea, it is in our best interest to ensure that we have some level of continuity in the leadership of the PCG, the agency tasked to patrol our territorial waters and secure our shores,” he said. —Tina G. Santos
