MANILA, Philippines — No tropical cyclone is expected to develop in the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) until February 4, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa).

“The map is very clear; we are not monitoring any potential tropical cyclone until February 4,” Pagasa weather specialist Junie Ruiz said in Filipino in a climate forum on Wednesday.

Ruiz, who is under Pagasa’s Climate Monitoring and Prediction section, added that if any weather disturbances form, they are likely to track toward the southern or western parts of the Visayas and eventually veer away from the country.

For February, the likelihood of tropical cyclone formation remains low based on climatological patterns, Ruiz further noted.

“If one does form, it will likely dissipate quickly because this is the peak of the northeast monsoon, which cyclones do not favor due to the cold winds,” he explained in Filipino.

Pagasa previously reported that the shear line, easterlies, and the northeast monsoon will bring cloudy skies and rains over various parts of the country on Wednesday.
