8 ash emissions, 30 volcanic quakes recorded in Kanlaon Volcano

MANILA, Philippines — Eight ash emissions and 30 volcanic earthquakes were recorded in Kanlaon Volcano over the past 24 hours, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported on Monday.

In its latest bulletin, Phivolcs said the ash emissions, observed from Sunday to early Monday, lasted between six and 46 minutes each.

On the other hand, the volcanic earthquakes also included seven volcanic tremors that lasted from six to 28 minutes.

Kanlaon Volcano, located in Negros Island, emitted 3,267 tons of sulfur dioxide during the same monitoring period.

It also produced a voluminous plume 750 meters high, drifting southwest and west.

The volcano remains under Alert Level 3, indicating intensified or magmatic unrest.

The agency reiterated its warning against flying any aircraft near the volcano.

Phivolcs also reminded the public of the potential hazards of Kanlaon’s unrest, including explosive eruptions, lava flows, ashfall, pyroclastic density currents, rockfalls, and lahars during heavy rainfall.

Evacuation from the six-kilometer radius of the volcano’s summit was also recommended.
