MMDA suspends number coding scheme on Jan. 29 due to Chinese New Year

MANILA, Philippines — The expanded number coding scheme will be suspended on Wednesday, January 29, in observance of the Chinese New Year, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) said Monday.

“Suspendido ang pagpapatupad ng expanded number coding scheme sa Miyerkules, Enero 29, bilang pagdiriwang ng Chinese New Year,” the MMDA’s Facebook post reads.

(The implementation of the expanded number coding scheme is suspended on Wednesday, January 29, in celebration of the Chinese New Year.)

“Kadalasang mabigat ang daloy ng trapiko sa mga lugar tulad ng Binondo sa Maynila kung saan isinasagawa ng mga Tsinoy ang kanilang tradisyon,” it added.

(Traffic is usually heavy in areas like Binondo, Manila, where the Chinese-Filipino community conducts their traditions.)

On Friday, January 24, the Manila Police District-Public Information Office (MPD-PIO) announced road closures starting 9 p.m. on January 28 in the following areas due to Chinese New Year activities:

  • Q. Paredes St. (from P. Burgos Ave. to Dasmariñas St.)
  • Jones Bridge
  • Plaza Cervantes
  • Binondo-Intramuros Bridge

Meanwhile, rerouting advisories from the MPD-PIO are as follows:

  • Vehicles from Reina Regente St. via Juan Luna St. heading to the southbound lane of Jones Bridge must turn left to Plaza Lorenzo Ruiz, right to Norberto Ty St., right to Yuchengco St., then left to Ongpin
  • Vehicles from P. Burgos Ave. or Taft Ave. heading to Jones Bridge should proceed to McArthur Bridge or Quezon Bridge
  • Vehicles from Plaza Sta. Cruz via Dasmariñas St. must turn right to Q. Paredes St.
  • Vehicles from Magallanes Drive going to Binondo-Intramuros Bridge should go straight to A. Soriano Ave. toward Anda Circle
  • Vehicles from Muelle de la Industria heading to Binondo-Intramuros Bridge must take Madrid St., right to San Fernando St., Plaza Lorenzo Ruiz, left to Q. Paredes St., right to Norberto Ty St., right to Yuchengco St., then left to Ongpin.
“Saan man ang destinasyon, laging tandaan: planuhin ang biyahe, sumunod sa batas trapiko, at mag-ingat sa pagmamaneho,” the MMDA said.
