MANILA, Philippines — Overcast skies and rains are expected over parts of Northern Luzon and Mindanao on Monday due to the easterlies and the northeast monsoon, or amihan, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said.

In a morning weathercast, Pagasa weather specialist Rhea Torres said the northeast monsoon would continue to bring cloudy skies with light rains over Batanes, Cagayan, and Apayao.

“Light rain or drizzles may be experienced in the eastern sections of Northern Luzon,” Torres said in Filipino.

Meanwhile, partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated light rains are expected over the Ilocos Region, the rest of the Cordillera Administrative Region, and the rest of Cagayan Valley.

“In the coming days, the northeast monsoon will continue to affect parts of Luzon,” Torres said in Filipino.

Torres also said the easterlies would bring cloudy skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms to the Caraga region in Mindanao.

She likewise warned that moderate to heavy rains may trigger flash floods or landslides in the area.

Generally fair weather is expected in the rest of the country on Monday, except for possible brief but sudden downpours due to the easterlies.

“For the rest of the country, the weather will be fair, except for the possibility of brief or sudden rain showers,” Torres said in Filipino.

She added that warm and humid conditions may persist at noon also due to the easterlies, which are warm winds from the Pacific Ocean.

Pagasa did not issue a gale warning for any of the country’s major seaboards on Monday.

However, it cautioned that moderate to rough seas may prevail in the coastal areas of northern Luzon, with waves reaching 2.1 to 3.1 meters high.
