MANILA, Philippines — Commission on Higher Education (CHEd) Chair Prospero de Vera III  has urged the Pamantasan ng Cabuyao president to issue a clarification about its “English-only policy” after it drew widespread backlash.

De Vera also advised the university chief to issue a statement to the media to explain this policy.

“I have already talked to the Pamantasan ng Cabuyao president to understand the basis and intent of his proposed policy,” de Vera told reporters in a Viber message on Wednesday.

“I advised him to immediately issue a press release to explain and clarify the issue and to respond to media interviews,” he continued. “It is best that the media interview him so he can explain the proposed policy.”

On Monday, the university said its English-only policy was made in a bid to foster academic excellence and global competitiveness.

The university has not issued a clarification as of posting time.

Historian Xiao Chua slammed this move, calling it a “slave mentality.”

Chua said in a Facebook post on Tuesday: “English only to be globally competitive? Que horror!”
