Shear line, ITCZ and amihan to bring cloudy skies, rains on Feb. 6

MANILA, Philippines — Overcast skies and rainy weather will prevail over many parts of the country on Thursday (February 6) due to three factors, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) reported.
The three weather systems are the shear line, the northeast monsoon or amihan, and the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ), according to Pagasa weather specialist Chenel Dominguez.
“Meron tayong tatlong weather system na nakakaapekto sa ngayon dito sa ating bansa. Una na dito ang pagbabalik ng shear line o ‘yung salubungan ng mainit at malamig na hangin na nakakaapekto dito sa may Visayas,” Dominguez noted in a morning forecast.
(We have three weather systems currently affecting the country. First is the return of the shear line, which is the meeting point of warm and cold air, affecting Visayas.)
The shear line will bring cloudy skies, scattered rains, and isolated thunderstorms in Visayas, Catanduanes, Albay, Sorsogon, Masbate, Romblon, Dinagat Islands and Surigao del Norte.
Article continues after this advertisementMeanwhile, the ITCZ will impact the weather in Mindanao, causing cloudy skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms in the Davao Region, Agusan del Norte, Agusan del Sur, and Surigao del Sur.
Article continues after this advertisement“Para naman sa nalalabing bahagi ng Mindanao, asahan naman po natin ang maaliwalas na panahon, pero hindi po mawawala ang mataas na tyansa ng mga localized thunderstorms pagdating sa hapon at sa gabi,” Dominguez said.
(For the rest of Mindanao, generally fair weather is expected, but there remains a high chance of localized thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening.)
Cagayan Valley, Aurora, Quezon, and the rest of the Bicol Region will experience cloudy skies with rain due to the northeast monsoon.
“For Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon, inaasahan naman natin ang bahagya hanggang sa maulap na papawirin na may mga isolated light rains,” Dominguez added.

The state weather specialist likewise warned of possible flash floods or landslides in areas affected by the three weather systems due to moderate to heavy rains.

Pagasa issued a gale warning over the eastern seaboards of Southern Luzon and Visayas due to the northeast monsoon.
This will affect the northern and eastern coasts of Catanduanes, the northern and eastern coasts of Northern Samar, and the eastern coast of Eastern Samar.
Rough to very rough sea conditions are also expected in these coastal areas, with wave heights ranging from 2.8 to 4.5 meters.
“Kaya pinapaalalahanan po natin ang mga kababayan po natin na delikado po pumalaot dito po sa mga nasabi po nating coastal waters,” Dominguez warned.
