MANILA, Philippines — Several balikbayan boxes at the Manila International Container Port in Tondo were found to contain marijuana kush valued at P39,614,400, the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) announced.

A PDEA report released on Friday said authorities flagged a container cargo at the MICP Container Facility Station 3 on Feb. 5.

About 28,296 grams of dried marijuana leaves were discovered in 30 boxes inside the container, following inspection and x-ray examination by a Bureau of Customs personnel as well as a K9 inspection.

Documents showed that the Balikbayan boxes came from Vancouver, Canada.

According to the PDEA, the listed shipper, receiver and forwarding companies are subject to investigation and may face appropriate charges for violating the Dangerous Drugs Act.
