Pagasa: Heavy rainfall expected in 17 provinces

MANILA, Philippines — A total of 17 provinces were placed under heavy rainfall outlook from Monday until Tuesday noon due to the effects of the shear line, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) reported.
In its latest advisory, Pagasa said nine provinces would see heavy to intense rainfall ranging from 100 to 200 millimeters (mm) from Monday to Tuesday noon:
- Palawan
- Sorsogon
- Albay
- Northern Samar
- Eastern Samar
- Samar
- Leyte
- Southern Leyte
- Biliran
“Numerous flooding events are likely, especially in areas that are urbanized, low-lying or near rivers,” the state weather bureau said.
It added that landslides are likely in “moderate to highly susceptible areas.”
Meanwhile, eight provinces were placed under moderate to heavy rainfall warning, where 50 to 100 mm of rain is expected during the same forecast period:

Article continues after this advertisementIn a separate bulletin, Pagasa reported that overcast skies with rains are expected across the country on Monday due to the combined effects of the shear line, easterlies, and the northeast monsoon or amihan.
Pagasa weather specialist Chenel Dominguez previously said the shear line would bring cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and isolated thunderstorms over the Visayas, Bicol Region, Mimaropa, Quezon, and Aurora.
“Because of the northeast monsoon, which brings cold winds, and the easterlies, which bring warm winds, their interaction results in what we call the shear line, which also causes rain,” Dominguez explained in Filipino.
A gale warning was also issued for the eastern seaboard of Central Luzon, Southern Luzon, and Visayas, as well as the seaboards of Northern Luzon, and the western seaboard of Central and Southern Luzon.
Wave heights ranging from 2.8 to 5.0 meters may be expected in these coastal areas, Pagasa said.
