MANILA, Philippines — Several areas in Palawan were placed under orange and yellow rainfall warning on Tuesday due to the shear line, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa).

The shear line, or the convergence of cold northeast monsoon winds and warm easterlies, is expected to bring heavy rainfall to eight areas in the province.

Under the orange rainfall warning, 15 to 30 millimeters (mm) of intense rain per hour may be observed and may persist for the next two hours.

The following are the Palawan areas placed under the orange rainfall warning:

  • Brooke’s Point
  • Bataraza
  • Balabac
  • Rizal

“Flooding is threatening in low-lying areas, and landslides are possible in mountainous areas,” Pagasa said in its rainfall warning advisory.

Meanwhile, the following areas in Palawan are under the yellow rainfall warning, where 7.5 to 15 mm of heavy rain per hour is expected to continue in the next two hours:

  • Quezon
  • Sofronio Española
  • Kalayaan

Pagasa warned that flooding is possible in low-lying areas under the yellow rainfall warning.

In a separate bulletin on Tuesday, Pagasa said the shear line will bring cloudy skies with scattered rains and isolated thunderstorms across the Visayas, Bicol Region, Mimaropa, Quezon and Aurora.

“Dahil po sa epekto ng shear line, makararanas pa rin po ng moderate to heavy na mga pag ulan sa bahagi po ng Kabisayaan, gayundin sa Southern Luzon ngayong araw,” Pagasa weather specialist Rhea Torres explained.

(Due to the effects of the shear line, we will still experience moderate to heavy rains in parts of the Visayas and Southern Luzon today.)

“Maaaring maranasan pa rin po ‘yung malalakas na buhos ng ulan dulot na epekto ng shear line, na posible pong magdulot ng mga pagbaha, pati na rin po yung pagguho ng lupa, especially since mga nakaraang araw ay patuloy po yung mga pag-ulan dulot na epekto ng shear line,” she added
