The Department of Education (DepEd) on Tuesday condemned the killing of its Sulu assistant schools division superintendent, calling it an “attack on the education system.”

MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Education (DepEd) on Tuesday condemned the killing of its Sulu assistant schools division superintendent, calling it an “attack on the education system.”

DepEd, in a statement, expressed deep sorrow over Sonatria Gaspar’s death, extending condolences to her family, colleagues, and the community she served.

“Dr. Gaspar’s enduring commitment and service inspired thousands of learners and countless colleagues. Her senseless passing robs us of her contributions. This violence steals futures of potential impact, leaving an absence that will be profoundly felt,” the agency said.

DepEd further emphasized that such acts of violence have no place in learning environments and vowed to support efforts to bring the perpetrators to justice.

“This incident is an attack on our education system. This has no place in our learning spaces, in our communities, and in our society,” the agency underscored.

“We commit to the safety, security, and protection of our educators, wherever they are in the country. We join our colleagues in BARMM in calling for swift justice and accountability,” it added.

DepEd assured that it is coordinating with Gaspar’s family and colleagues to assist the bereaved loved ones.

It also said that it will continue working with the Ministry of Basic, Higher, and Technical Education to foster a peaceful environment for education in the region.

“DepEd denounces all forms of violence against our dedicated personnel and teachers and calls for justice,” DepEd reiterated.

“Our shared mission is bigger than this violence. May her legacy inspire us all to work towards an education free from force and fear,” it concluded.
