MANILA, Philippines — Three individuals were arrested by police in separate operations for allegedly selling fake government identification cards online, the Philippine National Police Anti-Cybercrime Group (PNP ACG) announced.

In an interview with reporters in Camp Camp on Wednesday, Police Lt. Wallen Arancillo, ACG spokesperson said, “Teenager[s] ranging from 18 to 25 years old ang nagbebenta (are the ones who are doing the selling).”

“Their main reason is that they need extra income. That’s why they can do these illegal online activities since it’s faster to sell online and there are many who buy these IDs,” Arancillo added in Filipino.

According to the ACG report released also on Wednesday, the anti-cybercrime units of the Northern and Quezon City Police Districts entrapped a suspect identified as “Marie” for selling fake Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth) IDs on Facebook.

The operation took place at 2:16 p.m. on Feb. 5 in Novaliches, Quezon City.

Five fake PhilHealth IDs and three fake tax identification number (TIN) IDs were confiscated from the suspect.

The counterfeit documents were being sold for between P180 and P480 each.

“Mas mahal kapag new member yung bibili ng ID (The ID is more expensive if the buyer is a new member.),” Arancillo explained.

Another report from the ACG showed that, at 8:35 p.m. on Feb. 9, anti-cybercrime police in Zamboanga City entrapped two individuals, identified only as “Chan” and “Nica,” also for selling fake government IDs on Facebook.

The pair was selling the fake IDs for between P400 and P600 each, with one suspect admitting having completed more than 20 transactions since starting the scheme, the ACG said.

The ACG did not detail which kinds of ID cards the pair produced.

The three suspects face charges for falsification by private individuals and use of falsified documents in relation to the Cybercrime Prevention Act, since the counterfeit ID cards were sold online.

According to Arancillo, based on the ACG’s investigation, the scheme attracts clients since “they would no longer have to line up at agency offices.”

However, Arancillo warned, “Maaaring gamitin itong mga IDs na ito sa mga fraudulent activities tulad ng mga online scams.”

“These can also be used to register SIM cards and to create social media accounts. So, these IDs that are fake and being sold online are really dangerous when they fall to the hands of cyber criminals,” she added.
