Pagadian City honors hero nurse who saved patient’s life

PAGADIAN CITY, ZAMBOANGA DEL SUR – A young nurse who died saving his patient aboard an ambulance that figured in a road crash was buried as a hero here on Thursday.
Jasper Alcala, a nurse with the Pagadian City Medical Center, was accompanying a patient on medical evacuation to Cagayan de Oro City, when the ambulance they were on fell on a roadside cliff in Barangay Dableston, Sultan Naga Dimaporo town, Lanao del Norte last Feb. 2.
Alcala protected his patient from the violent impact.
Rescuers rushed Alcalá to hospital in Sultan Naga Dimaporo town where he was declared dead. The patient, watcher and ambulance driver survived the tragedy.
“We offer our sincerest salute to n𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐞 h𝐞𝐫𝐨 𝐉𝐚𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐫 𝐀𝐥𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐚, whose unwavering dedication, courage, and compassion touched the lives of so many,” said Pagadian City Mayor Samuel Co.

His selflessness, bravery, and commitment to saving others will forever remain in our hearts as a testament to the true meaning of heroism,” Co added.
Article continues after this advertisementThe Philippine Nurses Association (PNA) Zamboanga Del Sur-Pagadian City Chapter noted how Alcala, in his final moments, “selflessly secured the patient in his arms in an effort to protect him as the ambulance overturned.”
“His act of courage and dedication exemplifies the true essence of a nurse’s unwavering commitment to saving lives, even at the cost of their own,” the PNA said in a statement.
The PNA “stands in solidarity with the nursing community in honoring his heroism. May his legacy continue to inspire us all,” the statement added.
“The School of Nursing extends our deepest condolences to the family of Sir Jasper. His courage, compassion, and selfless service will remain in our hearts, and his sacrifice will always be honored,” said a statement from Alcala’s alma mater, JH Cerilles State College.
“With profound respect and gratitude, we honor nurse Jasper Alcala, a beacon of selflessness, courage, and dedication. His unwavering commitment to saving lives and serving others stands as a testament to the true meaning of heroism,” said a tribute from the Senior High School Student Government of Zamboanga del Sur National High School, where Alcala graduated.
