MANILA, Philippines — An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.5 rocked Eastern Visayas on Saturday morning, said the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).
According to the agency, the quake struck 39 kilometers (km.) northeast of Hernani town in Eastern Samar province at 9:18 a.m. on Feb. 15.
It had a depth of focus of 10 km. and its nature was tectonic.
Aftershocks are expected.
The following areas recorded the instrumental intensities:
Intensity III (Weak):
- Carigara, Leyte, Dulag and Abuyog in Leyte
- Villareal and Gandara in Samar
Intensity II (Slightly Felt):
- Isabel, Burauen, Kananga, Javier and Palo in Leyte
- San Roque and Mapanas in Northern Samar
- Basey and Marabut in Samar
Intensity I (Scarcely Perceptible):
- Naval in Biliran
- Bulusan in Sorsogon
- Sogod in Southern Leyte
