Kanlaon Volcano spews more sulfur dioxide, logs 32 quakes

MANILA, Philippines — Kanlaon Volcano on Negros Island emitted over 4,000 metric tons of sulfur dioxide on Sunday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said on Monday.

In a bulletin, Phivolcs reported that Kanlaon’s sulfur dioxide flux reached 4,604 metric tons, up from the 2,625 metric tons recorded on Saturday.

The volcano also produced a moderate 200-meter-high plume that drifted westward, the state seismologist added.

Phivolcs warned that potential hazards include explosive eruptions, lava flows, ashfall, pyroclastic density currents, rockfalls, and lahars during heavy rains.

The agency also reminded the public that flying near the volcano remains strictly prohibited.
