CHR condemns killing of Zambo Sur barangay kagawad
MANILA, Philippines — The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) has condemned the killing of a barangay kagawad (councilman) in Pagadian City, Zamboanga del Sur, last February 5 and sent a team to help in the investigation.
In a statement on Thursday, the CHR Idenounced the killing of Francisco Maca Jr., a councilman of Poblacion in the municipality of Kumalarang.
Maca succumbed to several gunshot wounds, mostly to the head.
He was shot by gunmen in front of a school campus.
“CHR vehemently denounces this violent act, which fosters fear and intimidation among public servants dedicated to serving their communities. Leaders and law enforcers must be able to perform their duties free from threats or violence,” it said.
“We also raise concern over the increasing violence in Region IX. CHR recently issued a statement expressing grave concern [about] these alarming incidents. With the 2025 national and local elections approaching, now more than ever, we must work together to ensure safer and more secure communities.” it added. (Sheba Barr, intern)
