MANILA, Philippines — Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla has warned policemen involved in partisan politics that they would be prosecuted as the 90-day campaign period for the Philippine midterm elections began this month.

“I will not hesitate to have them charged and to make sure that the due process of law is observed,” Remulla said during his visit to the Police Regional Office Cordillera Administrative Region in La Trinidad, Benguet, on Feb. 19.

“You have seen my record. I have a very low tolerance for malfeasance especially in the PNP (Philippine National Police),” he told reporters at a press briefing.

He cited how the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) pursued cases against the policemen involved in the P6.7-billion drug haul in Tondo, Manila, in 2022.

“I reviewed those cases immediately and now they are in jail, so I will not hesitate,” he said.

Philippine National Police chief Gen. Rommel Marbil also told the police last year to remain neutral ahead of the campaign period for the midterm elections.

“I am reminding every officer that political neutrality is a core responsibility. Do not allow yourselves to be influenced or used by politicians,” Marbil said.

“We will not tolerate any officer who compromises our commitment to neutrality and fairness. Any form of political interference, whether directly or indirectly, will be met with swift and decisive action,” he added.
