A 30-year-old artist took the well-known saying “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure” to heart as he built an 8-foot figure of Optimus Prime from the sci-fi film series “Transformers” out of cardboard.
Dennis James Izon, of Balanga City, Bataan, posted his journey to completing his large-scale project on his YouTube channel to showcase his love for the series and his talent for fashioning craftworks from scratch.
Making the ordinary extraordinary
Izon told that even as a child he already had a passion for craftsmanship. Be would often transform scrap materials he picked up from the river into toys just so he could have something to play with.
His drive to create things using what people generally call “trash” has also led him to become an artist. Izon saw the value of cardboard beyond its function, turning it into the core of his crafts.

Despite the challenges, Izon perseveres in continuing to do art by believing in himself. Like cardboard, he knows he must also evolve into an extraordinary artist by gaining experience and knowledge.
“Patience is the key. You need to believe in yourself that you can do it. I just started with simple admiration, which turned into hobbies, and now I’m expanding my knowledge about art,” Izon said in Filipino.
