MANILA, Philippines —  The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) recorded a nearly 50 percent drop in fire incidents from January 1 to March 4 this year compared to the same period last year.

Speaking at a public briefing on Tuesday, BFP Spokesperson Senior Supt. Annalee Carbajal-Atienza said 2,442 fire incidents were logged in the first 64 days of 2025—43 percent lower than the 4,316 incidents during the same time last year.

Carbajal-Atienza still urged the public, however, to be cautious and mindful, particularly when using electrical appliances, as electrical issues remain the leading cause of fires.

“Electrical causes are the leading cause of fires, and this is related to our electricity use, especially now that the weather is hot. We should be responsible when using electric fans. If they are old or slightly damaged. It’s advisable to replace them with a new one,” she said in Filipino at the Bagong Pilipinas Ngayon briefing.

“Huwag na pong pagtiyagaan na tipirin, i-repair dahil mas malaki po ang magagastos natin. At ang pinakamasaklap, may nasasawi po sa ating pamilya,” she also said.

The country observes Fire Prevention Month in March of each year.

This is also the month when warmer weather is typically experienced due to the upcoming dry season.
