‘Last surge of the northeast monsoon’ reached, says Pagasa

MANILA, Philippines—Cloudy skies and rain showers are expected across the country on Thursday due to the easterlies and the northeast monsoon or amihan, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) reported.
In a morning weather forecast, Pagasa weather specialist Chenel Dominguez said the easterlies, or warm winds from the Pacific Ocean, will bring cloudy skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms in Zamboanga Peninsula, Basilan, Sulu, and Tawi-Tawi.
“Ito [easterlies] rin po ‘yung nagdadala ng mainit at maalinsangan na panahon at may mga konting pag-ulan din po lalo na rin po dito sa eastern section ng ating bansa,” she noted.
(These easterlies also bring hot and humid weather, along with some rainfall, especially in the eastern section of our country.)
Dominguez likewise noted that the northeast monsoon will trigger partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated light rains over Batanes.
“Inaasahan po natin na ito na po ‘yung huling bugso ng northeast monsoon at hindi na rin po ito kasing lamig ng mga nakaraang bugso po natin,” she emphasized.
(We expect this to be the last surge of the northeast monsoon, and it will not be as cold as the previous ones.)

Meanwhile, generally fair weather is expected in Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon on Thursday, according to Dominguez.
“Pero magiging mainit at maalinsangan po ang ating tanghali hanggang hapon na may tsansa ng mga panandaliang pag-ulan dulot ng mga localized thunderstorms pagdating sa hapon at sa gabi,” Dominguez added.
(However, it will be hot and humid from noon to the afternoon, with chances of brief rain showers due to localized thunderstorms in the evening.)

Pagasa hoisted a gale warning over the northern seaboard of northern Luzon due to the northeast monsoon.
“Kaya pinapaalalahanan po natin ang mga kababayan po natin, lalo na po ‘yung may mga sasakyang maliit pandagat na delikado po pumalaot dito po sa may Batanes area,” Dominguez cautioned.
(We remind our fellow citizens, especially those with small sea vessels, that sailing in the Batanes area is dangerous.)
She added that rough to very rough sea conditions may persist in these coastal areas, with wave heights ranging from 2.8 to 4.5 meters.

The state weather bureau also predicts the following temperature ranges in the country’s major cities on Thursday:
- Metro Manila: 25 to 34 degrees Celsius (°C)
- Baguio City: 17 to 25°C
- Laoag City: 24 to 31°C
- Tuguegarao: 24 to 33°C
- Legazpi City: 25 to 31°C
- Tagaytay City: 22 to 31°C
- Puerto Princesa City: 25 to 32°C
- Kalayaan Islands: 25 to 32°C
- Cebu City: 28 to 31°C
- Iloilo City: 25 to 33°C
- Tacloban City: 25 to 31°C
- Cagayan De Oro City: 25 to 31°C
- Zamboanga City: 25 to 32°C
- Davao City: 24 to 32°C
