MANILA, Philippines — The Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) has ordered the emergency procurement of “sando” shirts for persons deprived of liberty (PDL) as the heat index continues to soar nationwide.

“As summer draws near, Bureau of Corrections Director General Gregorio Pio P. Catapang Jr. ordered the emergency procurement of singlet or ‘sando’ for persons deprived of liberty to avoid heat-related illnesses resulting from high heat index,” the BuCor said in a statement on Tuesday.

BuCor did not provide the total number of sando it would order.

There are 53,192 PDLs nationwide, according to the bureau.

Meanwhile, Catapang also ordered the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) to take immediate and protective measures against the heat.

In 2021, the congestion rate at the NBP alone stands at 344 percent, BuCor Deputy Director-General for Administration and Operations Gabriel Chaclag said.

The state weather bureau has predicted that the heat index in most areas nationwide would range from 33 to 41°C for the rest of the week.
