DepEd hiring 7,000 contractuals for nonteaching jobs

MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Education (DepEd) will hire more than 7,000 administrative personnel under contracts of service to spare teachers from non-teaching tasks.
A total of 7,062 school-based administrative support staff will be renewed and hired in eligible public schools, Education Secretary Sonny Angara announced on Thursday.

The administrative personnel will assist with school operations, such as the preparation of reports, coordinating school programs and activities, and handling other clerical tasks assigned by the school head, based on the renewal and hiring guidelines.
Interested applicants for the job openings must have at least a senior high school diploma and basic administrative skills, said Angara, adding that no prior work experience or training is required for the job.
As for renewals, the incumbent personnel must meet the “performance expectations” based on their Terms of Reference and evaluation by their Schools Division Office (SDO).
Newly hired personnel will also undergo a selection process, including a review of their credentials, and will be interviewed by school heads and SDOs.
According to Angara, DepEd has allocated additional funds for maintenance and other operating expenses (MOOE) to cover the salaries of the soon-to-be hired personnel.
Their compensation will be based on the prevailing regional minimum wage, multiplied by 22 working days every month.
Under the personnel’s contract, this will include a 12.5 percent premium and will be paid in tranches, Angara said.
“The initiative reinforces DepEd’s efforts to remove non-teaching tasks from educators, ensuring that they can dedicate more time to lesson preparation and student engagement,” Angara said in a statement.
With this initiative, he pointed out that teachers can now focus on their “core responsibility,” which is to teach in classrooms.
“Our teachers belong in the classroom, not behind paperwork,” Angara noted.
He explained that the hiring of more than 7,000 administrative personnel was in line with DepEd Order No. 002, series of 2024, which removes administrative tasks from teachers.
This is also aligned with DepEd Order No. 005, which rationalizes teachers’ workloads and provides guidelines for compensating teaching overload, he added.
