ANGELES CITY, Pampanga, Philippines — The local government here officially inaugurated the first solar-powered, fully airconditioned public school in Central Luzon on Thursday.

The Belen Homesite Elementary School in Barangay Sto. Cristo features seven new air-conditioned classrooms.

It can accommodate approximately 189 students, according to the Angeles City Information Office.

“With a total of 32 kVA solar panels, Belen Homesite Elementary School stands as a model for other cities to follow, demonstrating that renewable energy can power our classrooms,” Mayor Carmelo Lazatin Jr. said.

Lazatin added that the solar-powered school “clearly shows that this clean energy program is doable – we can protect the environment by doing away with costly electricity that uses fossil fuel.”

“This school is a showcase of Angeles City’s commitment to education and sustainability for the entire Philippines,” the mayor noted.

“It proves that local governments can prioritize public schools, ensuring that they are modern, energy-efficient, and conducive to learning,” he pointed out.

The mayor said some P3 million had been infused to renovate the classrooms with new paint, tiles, and fixtures.

Apart from the public schools, Lazatin’s administration has started to install solar panels in all city government offices, including Angeles City Hall, 33 barangay halls, rural health units, and all offsite offices.
