Expanded tertiary education equivalency law a game changer – Escudero
MANILA, Philippines — Senate President Francis Escudero on Friday regarded the passage of the Expanded Tertiary Education Equivalency and Accreditation Program (ETEEAP) into law as a “game changer,” emphasizing its contribution to accessibility of higher education.
Escudero said the law will create more educational opportunities for Filipinos, particularly working professionals.
“This law addresses a pressing need for flexibility and inclusivity in our educational system. By recognizing the value of prior learning and work experience, we are creating a pathway for individuals to achieve their academic aspirations without having to sacrifice their careers or personal responsibilities,” Escudero said in a statement.
The Presidential Communications Office confirmed that President Ferdinand Marcos signed the ETEEAP Act or the Republic Act No. 12124 on Monday.
“I extend my gratitude to President Marcos for signing this transformative legislation into law. The ETEEAP Act is a game-changer, making higher education more accessible, especially to Filipinos who have gained significant skills and knowledge outside traditional classrooms,” Escudero added.
The ETEEAP will “identify, assess, validate, and assign equivalent undergraduate-level and special graduate programs of prior learning from formal, non-formal, and informal learning systems and relevant work experiences to qualified individuals for the grant of appropriate academic degrees.”
He also commended the Commission on Higher Education, which will serve as the lead agency in implementing the program.
Escudero also said that he is “optimistic” that the law will create more laws or policies in ensuring accessible and inclusive education for a more competitive Filipino workforce.
