MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Health (DOH) on Saturday reminded the public to promptly seek medical attention for early symptoms of dengue fever.
DOH Spokesperson Albert Domingo said the complications of dengue can be prevented once a patient is given enough and immediate medical attention.
“Importante na huwag hintayin na may makitang pagdurugo, advanced stage na po ‘yun. Early stage pa lang po, sa lagnat, magpakonsulta na,” Domingo said at a news forum in Quezon City.
(It is important to not wait for bleeding episodes, that is the advanced stage already. In its early stage, when has fever, consult [a doctor] already.)
“Kasi ang dengue, naaagapan kung mabibigyan ng tinatawag na hydration. Ibig sabihin, suero, binabantayan ng doktor,” Domingue added.
(Because dengue can be mitigated with hydration or intravenous fluids, monitored by a doctor.)
He pointed out that self-medication at home by drinking water and using herbal remedies will not work as the doctors also need to monitor a patient’s platelet count.
“Wala pa pong gamot sa dengue. Hindi po tumatalab ang tawa-tawa, dahon ng papaya… Ang tumatalab po ay early consultation at hydration sa ospital,” he emphasized.
(There is still no medicine for dengue. Tawa-tawa, papaya leaves will not work… What works is early consultation and hydration in the hospital.)
Dengue fast lanes
Domingo also shared that amid the rising dengue cases, the agency opened “Dengue Fast Lanes” in DOH-run hospitals across the country.
This initiative aims to provide immediate medical attention to symptomatic patients.
The DOH recorded a total of 52,008 dengue cases from January 1 to February 22, 2025.
It represents a 64-percent increase from the same period last year.
