BAGUIO CITY 鈥� A candidate for municipal councilor in Abra was shot and killed by an unidentified gunman while on his way home on Wednesday afternoon, police reported.
The victim was identified as Melchor Gatmen, a resident of Barangay Pang-ot in Pilar town. He suffered a gunshot wound to the chest, which caused his immediate death.
Initial investigations revealed that Gatmen was riding his motorcycle when the assailant ambushed him at 5:10 p.m. in Barangay Dintan, also in Pilar. His companion was unharmed.
In a separate incident on the same day, a former village chief was injured after being shot by an unidentified suspect in Barangay Agtangao in the capital town of Bangued.
The victim, identified as Ruben Balubar of Barangay Lubong in Bangued, was also riding his motorcycle when he was attacked around 6 p.m. He suffered a gunshot wound to the leg and was rushed to the hospital, where he is recovering.
Authorities recovered several .45 caliber bullet casings from the scene of the second shooting.
Police are conducting investigations into both incidents.
