4 areas to experience ‘extreme caution’ level of heat index Monday

A total of 34 areas across the country registered “dangerous” peak heat indices or above 42ºC (degrees Celsius), said the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) on Tuesday.

MANILA, Philippines — Four areas are expected to reach the highest heat index on Monday at 41°C, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa).

In its updated 5 p.m. Sunday bulletin, the state weather bureau reported that its monitoring stations in Coron in Palawan, Puerto Princesa City in Palawan, Catbologan in Samar, and Guiuan in Eastern Samar forecast a 41°C heat index in their respective areas.

The four areas will fall under the  “extreme caution” category or 33°C to 41°C. The state weather bureau explained that a person may experience heat cramps and exhaustion at this level. Heat stroke may also be possible with continued exposure to the sun.

Earlier, the Department of Health urged the public to stay hydrated and minimize outdoor activities between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. to reduce the risk of heat stroke and other heat-related ailments.

It also advised the public to wear loose and lightweight clothing to stay cool amid the scorching heat.
