4Ps grantees in Malabon, Navotas get cell phones

MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) on Tuesday distributed new smartphones to around 50 beneficiaries of the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) in Malabon and Navotas so that they could get their monthly grants through e-wallets, instead of the usual cash cards.

The move was part of the digital financial inclusion initiative called “e-Panalo ang Kinabukasan” for 4Ps households willing to learn about using online applications such as GCash for their payouts and finances, the DSWD said in a statement.

Over 30,000 mobile phones will be provided to beneficiaries under the program, with those in “survival” mode or living in geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas to be prioritized.

The DSWD said the mobile phones were given away at no cost to the government as the units were sponsored by its telco partners. —Kathleen de Villa
