MANILA, Philippines — The Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) thwarted on Wednesday a female visitor’s attempt to smuggle crystal meth — locally known as shabu — inside the New Bilibid Prison.

BuCor Director General Gregorio Pio Catapang Jr. identified the woman as Rovelyn Fabillar, 26, a registered visitor of inmate Lester Martin Ramos.

The shabu was wrapped in a condom and placed inside a transparent plastic.

Catapang said the contraband was discovered during a routine security inspection of visitors at the inmate visiting services unit (IVSU)-Maximum Security Compound, where BuCor personnel noticed irregularities in Fabillar’s abdomen.

Fabillar was turned over to the Muntinlupa police, while the confiscated drugs were turned over to the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) for proper disposition.

BuCor has set up measures to prevent the smuggling of illegal drugs inside its penitentiaries after several of its inmates were tagged in the illegal drug trade.

Last year, BuCor acquired two advanced full-body scanners that can detect contraband ingested or hidden under clothing or inside a person’s body to reduce the need for invasive strip searches and manual cavity checks.
