MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine National Police Highway Patrol Group (PNP HPG) will bolster security at checkpoints across the country following a road rage and shooting in Antipolo City that left one dead.

This came after a directive from PNP Chief Gen. Rommel Marbil to mobilize the HPG at Commission on Elections (Comelec) checkpoints.

“The Highway Patrol Group will add two to four of our personnel to the total of 86 provincial highway patrol teams nationwide,” HPG spokesperson Lt. Nadame Malang said in Filipino at a press briefing in Camp Crame on Thursday.

“Our citizens can expect that there’d be more or that there’d be HPG personnel joining the initiative of the local police force,” he added.

The road rage and shooting occurred on Sunday, March 30, along Marcos Highway in Sitio Calumpang, ending with the suspect’s arrest at a Comelec checkpoint.

The suspect faces one count of murder and two counts of frustrated murder.

As for the gun, although the suspect had a license to own and possess a firearm, he did not have the required Comelec certificate of authority to exempt him from the election gun ban.

“One of his additional guidelines… is for the HPG to really scour through and check whether there is any contraband that the HPG hopes to prevent from being brought to another place,” Malang said in Filipino.
