Dangerous heat index expected in 3 areas on April 7

MANILA, Philippines — Virac town in Catanduanes province is again expected to experience a dangerous heat index of 43°C on Monday, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa).

If this happens, Virac’s heat index will hit the “danger” category for five consecutive days, with its highest reaching 45°C last April 2.

In its latest bulletin, the state weather bureau also said its monitoring stations in Dagupan City in Pangasinan and Dumangas in Iloilo forecast a 42°C heat index in the areas.

A heat index of 42ºC to 51ºC falls under the “danger” category. At this level, “heat cramps and heat exhaustion are likely,” and “heatstroke is probable with continued exposure,” Pagasa said.

Meanwhile, below are areas that might be placed under the “extreme caution” category with a heat index of 33° to 41°:

To reduce the risk of heat stroke and other heat-related illnesses, the Department of Health urged the public to stay hydrated and minimize outdoor activities between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

The agency also advised the public to wear loose and lightweight clothing to stay cool amid the scorching heat.
